Willie was born on June 21, 1939, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to Henry and Mattie Bridges. On June 11, 2026, the Lord called this beautiful soul home. 

At the age of nineteen, Willie made his way to Jackson, Michigan, where he was lovingly given the nickname “Big John” by his dear friend Fred Fowler—a name that stayed with him through the years. He began his working life at the Hayes Hotel and later at Clark Equipment, where he remained until the company relocated to Tennessee. Choosing to stay close to home, Willie then joined General Motors in Lansing, Michigan, and began a new chapter there. In time, he transferred to the GM Metal Fab Plant in Flint, where he faithfully worked until his retirement in 2007. 

Willie gave his life to the Lord in 1980 and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and faithful member of The Bread House, where he served as a deacon for more than 30 years, until health challenges no longer allowed his physical presence. He had a heart for people and was deeply loved by all who knew him, especially the young people who were naturally drawn to his warmth and kindness. Willie was truly a gentle giant—funny, welcoming, generous, and a thoughtful listener who shared his wisdom with humility and grace. He loved telling stories, especially those about his childhood and growing up in Mississippi, and he had a special way of making others feel seen, heard, and at home in his presence. Though he was a man of simple pleasures, he enjoyed watching sports and exploring different restaurants for a good meal. More than anything, Willie found joy in opening his home to others. Over the years, he and his wife warmly welcomed many through their doors, sharing home-cooked meals, heartfelt fellowship, and the kind of love that made everyone feel like family. People were drawn to Willie not only because of who he was, but because of how he made them feel—and they came often.

Preceding Willie in death were: his parents, Henry and Mattie Bridges; his son, Brian “Duane” Bridges; his grandson, Brandon Bridges; his brother, Otis Bridges; his sisters, Marie Looney and Lula Bell Ferrell; nephews, Sonny B. Looney Jr., Dennis Bridges, Larry Bridges, and Benny Bridges; daughter-in-law, Annie Hall; and his close friend and brother, James Bransford, all of whom he dearly missed. 

Willie leaves to cherish his precious memory: his devoted wife of 45 years, Jeannette; seven children, Terry (Eileen) Bridges of Lansing, Sherry (Ronald) Allen of Jackson, Kimberly Wade of Lansing, Todd (April) Bridges of Albion, Lloyd Wade of Jackson, Shannon Johnson of Sterling Heights, and Delron Hall of Jackson; twenty-two grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; his sister, Willie Dee Gladney of Tupelo, MS; his niece/sister, Dorothy Fowler of Jackson; along with nineteen additional nieces and nephews. He also leaves extended family and friends: Jeff, Jolee, Harrison, and Helen Hamlin; Matt Gleason of Lansing; and his beloved fur buddy, Mushu.
