Obituary

Willie Ray Blair, a devoted husband, loving father, gifted educator, and faithful servant in the Lord’s church, was born on January 14, 1940, in Jackson, Tennessee. He was the first of eight children born to Oliver and Eva Blair. From an early age, Willie’s life reflected a deep commitment to learning, family, and faith—values that would guide him throughout his life.

Willie graduated from Gibson County Training School in 1958 and went on to pursue his passion for mathematics at Lane College, a historically Black college in Jackson, Tennessee, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Following graduation, he answered a call to service beyond his community by joining the Peace Corps. For two years, he served as a mathematics teacher in Nigeria, leaving a lasting impact on the students he taught.

Upon returning to the United States, Willie continued his academic journey at Michigan State University, where he earned a master’s degree in mathematics. He eventually settled in Lansing, Michigan, where he met the love of his life, Ann Marie Moore. The two were united in marriage and shared 58 years of love, partnership, and devotion until her passing in 2025. Their union was blessed with two sons, Jason and Jonathan.

Willie dedicated three decades of his life to education as a mathematics teacher in the Lansing School District, primarily at Otto Junior High School. Known for his patience, wisdom, and passion for teaching, he inspired generations of students. During the summers, he also worked for several years as a security guard at General Motors. Even after retiring from full-time teaching, Willie continued to share his knowledge by working in the math lab at Lansing Community College.

Beyond his professional life, Willie’s faith was the cornerstone of his identity. He was a devoted member of the Holmes Road Church of Christ, where he faithfully served in many capacities over the years, including song leader, Bible school teacher, treasurer, deacon, and eventually elder. His leadership, humility, and unwavering commitment to God left a profound and lasting impression on his church family.

On April 24, 2026, Willie transitioned from this life, resting from a lifetime of love, service, and dedication.

He was preceded in death by: his beloved parents, Oliver and Eva Blair; his cherished wife, Ann; his brothers, Leotra Blair, Isaac Blair, and Stanley Blair; and his sister, Nettie Ruth Dupree.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his two sons, Jason (Ramona) and Jonathan (Kyre); three grandsons, Bryson, Christian, and Cameron; two sisters, Mattie and Doretha; one brother, Grady; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He will also be deeply missed by his spiritual family at the Holmes Road Church of Christ.

Willie Ray Blair’s legacy of faith, education, service, and love will live on in all who knew him. His life stands as a testament to quiet strength, enduring devotion, and a heart committed to both God and others.
