William David Word, Sr., affectionately known as “Bill” was born on June 7, 1936, in Lincoln County (Fayetteville), Tennessee to Sherman and Jimmie Beatrice (Stone) Word. Bill was educated in the Lincoln County Schools, graduating from West End High School in 1954. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army, serving from 1954-1956.

From an early age, Bill, developed a strong work ethic, working as he called it, “a professional bed maker” after school at the local motel. Later he worked at the local golf course, where he developed a love, talent and a passion for the sport.

Bill relocated to Albion, Michigan and began employment with Hayes-Albion, where he worked as a foreman. He later attended Lansing Community College and received his CDL license and begin driving for Yellow Freight System for 30 years, before retiring.

His hands were never afraid of hard work and providing for his family. You could find him gardening, mowing his lawn, shoveling snow and fixing items around the house. Having impeccable driving skills; he was often on the highway traveling to various destinations vacationing and supporting family and friends. He remained active by driving for the Riley Funeral Home during his early retirement years. Very informed and civic minded, Bill volunteered with the local election board during elections to ensure all citizens were afforded an opportunity to vote.

Bill accepted Christ early in his life and was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church, serving in several capacities, including Trustee and a member of the church security team.

Bill was an avid golfer and bowler. He played in many leagues over the years. And most summer months you could find him at Royal Scot Golf Course walking the greens and hitting some golf balls. During the winter months, he remained active via various bowling leagues. He was a member of the local Teamsters Union 243 and the Capitol Lodge No. 8, F. & A. M., PHA, Lansing, Michigan.

He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy: three children, sons, Richard Word of Fayetteville, TN., William David Word, Jr. of Albion, MI., daughter, Denise (Rod) Eady of Bonaire, GA.; stepdaughter, Sandra Twymon (Charles) Anderson, Southfield, MI; grandchildren, Rakita W. Word, Mario G. Moore, DeMaria L. Word, Jalen J. Ben, William D. Word, III, Kyra J. Eady, Derek E. Word, Chantel Jones, Avery Orr and Erika Orr; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Judith Louise Jones; brothers, Tommy L. Jones and Kenneth R. Jones; sisters-in-love, Lavel Word, Tiny (Rogers Sr.) Reynolds and Margaret Jones; God-children, Elizabeth Faye, George C., Reginald R., Joseph A., Melissa L. Craig; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by: his wife, Juanita; parents, Sherman and Jimmie Beatrice; stepfather, Robert Jones, Sr.; siblings, Clyde Word, Charles Word, Barbara Bean, and Robert Jones, Jr.

The family would like to thank everyone who has offered their love, prayers, support, and kindness during this difficult time. Your presence, calls, messages, and thoughtful gestures have brought comfort to our family and reminded us how deeply he was loved. We are forever grateful for the memories shared and the love that continues to surround us.
