William “Bill” Robert West was born on April 25, 1944, in Tazewell, Virginia, to Clyde and Leola West. In 1951, the family moved to Lansing, Michigan, where Bill later graduated from Grand Ledge High School.

Bill proudly served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Following his service, he attended Lansing Community College and earned his skilled trade certificate in bricklaying. For nearly 40 years, he worked as a bricklayer for J & J and Shiffer Mason Contractors, contributing his craftsmanship to countless landmarks throughout Michigan, including the State Capitol and the Lugnuts Stadium. His work remains part of the landscape he loved.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He leaves behind: his beloved wife of 57 years, Cindy West; his sons Mark (Kellie Jo) West of Grand Ledge and Brian (Kelly) West of Lansing; and siblings Jennings West and Mona West. In addition, so many will cherish his memory, including: grandchildren, Emmie, Noah, Kara (Riley), and Brandon (Tara); great-grandchildren, Kaden, Karder, River, Reign, and Asher and adored grand-dog, Mollie. He also leaves behind extended family and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

Bill found joy in many things but had a special love of baseball—especially cheering for the Lugnuts and the Detroit Tigers. He and his wife had half of season tickets for 25 straight seasons. He enjoyed visiting South Haven, walking the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day, playing cards, and talking with family and friends. He especially enjoyed attending and cheering for his grandchildren at their sporting events. He was a man who cherished time spent with those he loved.

Bill departed this life on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. He was preceded in death by: his brother Richie West and his sister Olivia Jane West.

Heartfelt appreciation is extended to the staff of Grand Haven Assisted Living Memory Care Unit and to Bill’s caregivers for their kindness and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a tree be planted in memory of Bill West—an enduring tribute to a man whose life helped build and strengthen the community around him.
