Wayne Theodore Roberts, "Coach", was born December 15, 1952, in Warren, Ohio, the son of Clifford Elmer and Cleola Roberts. He was the third oldest of four children. He married Shelly Roberts, nee Griffin, of Warren, Ohio on August 21, 1976. He graduated from Western Reserve High School of Warren, Ohio, where his love and gift of football led him to pursue a Bachelor's degree in political science at Ball State University. He was drafted to the Dallas Cowboys in 1975. Although his time with the Cowboys was brief due to an injury, he was forever a loyal fan and he officially earned his bachelor degree in 1987 from Ball State University. Wayne was employed by General Motors in Lordstown, Ohio and transferred to Lansing, Michigan in February of 1990 where he was employed as a Supervisor. Wayne retired in October 2008 after 32 years of service. Wayne was actively involved in church and the community coaching football. He has touched and inspired many lives. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. Wayne Theodore "Coach" Roberts, at the age of 62, of Holt passed away January 18, 2015 as a result of a long battle with cancer. His family was by his side when he drifted off to be with the Lord. He leaves to forever cherish his memory: his wife, Shelly; two daughters and son-in-laws, Altramese Roberts-Tompkins (Brandon Tompkins) of Graniteville, South Carolina and Nyasha Roberts McIntyre (Ryan Aaron McIntyre) of Simpsonville, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Noah Ryan McIntyre, Brandon Tompkins, Jr., and Ellaunie Tompkins; mother, Cleola Roberts of Warren, Ohio; sister, Betty Williams of Warren, Ohio; brother, Clifford Roberts of Warren, Ohio; brother, Kenneth Roberts of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Mr. Roberts will lie in repose Wednesday, January 21, 12-8pm at the Riley Funeral Home, 426 West St. Joseph Street, Lansing, MI 48933. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 22, 11am at the Friendship Baptist Church, 2912 Pleasant Grove Road, Lansing, MI 48910.
