Walter Michael
Conyers
February 1, 1952 – July 6, 2024
On July 6, 2024, Walter Michael Conyers departed this world. "Michael" to his family and "Walt" to most of his friends, lived a good life and was loved by many. Despite our feelings of loss, he was on time to meet his Heavenly Father.
If you knew Walt, you know that he adored his children and grandchildren. Jazz was his second love. In his adolescence he played the trumpet. At the early age of 13 he frequented the jazz clubs in Detroit. He claimed his height and mustache never gave him away. His love of jazz never left him. He had a legendary collection of LPs and discs.
Walter was an elegant man. Prior to his illness he loved travel and eating at gourmet restaurants wherever he went. If he was around, you heard his infectious laugh, saw his warm smile and knew you were about to make a friend.
He was born in Detroit, Michigan to Ethel Lee Conyers and Walter Randolph Conyers. Walter graduated as valedictorian from what was then Western High School in Detroit. At 16, he made his way to Michigan State University where he briefly played basketball and earned a social science degree with a specialty in labor relations. His career included work for the Boys & Girls Club of Lansing. The State of Michigan provided him with opportunities for growth primarily in labor relations for the Department of Education, and in later years working for Rehabilitation Services.
A Detroit native, Walter grew up on 25th Street and later lived in River Rouge in the house he helped his father build. He loved hanging out with his older brother, Jerome, who played the horn and introduced him to music. For fun he read the dictionary.
He loved Brown-Thomas Family reunions and attended more than 20 across the country escorting his mother who was affectionally known as "Aunt Frankie."
He was preceded in death by: his mother and father, Walter and Ethel Conyers; brothers, William Conyers and Jerome Randolph; his son, Dane Conyers.
He leaves behind: his wife of 25 years, Jacquelynne; daughter, Nikki Dunn; son, Miles Conyers; granddaughter, Lena Dunn; grandson, Dante Dunn; step grandchildren, Christopher Borden, Brandon McClinton-El, Vivianna Mc Clinton-El and Mariah McClinton-El; great grandson, Asa Jackson; sisters, Pearl Williams, Elaine Conyers and Shirley Conyers; as well as a host of family and friends. Special friends include, William and
Sheryl Weir, Aileen Syms, and Lee and Phyliss Meadows.
In lieu of flowers please send a donation in memory of Walter to the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing, 4315 Pleasant Grove, Lansing MI 48910.
