Susan Bernice Lewis Gill was born March 27, 1931 in Lansing, Michigan, the sixth of seven children born to Rankin and Valeria Lewis. A lifelong resident of Lansing, Susan attended Lansing Public Schools, was a band member and graduated from J. W. Sexton High School in 1949. After attending Wilberforce College, Susan went to work for the State of Michigan, retiring in 1989 after 37 years of service as a supervisor in the Michigan Department of Treasury. Susan was preceded in death by: her son, Lewis Avery West; fraternal grandparents, William T. and Susie Lewis; parents; brothers, William Rankin, Boyd, Richard, and Rodney; and sisters, Katherine and Shirley. The Lewis family have been members of Trinity A.M.E. Church since its inception as Collins Memorial and Susan continued membership as long as her health allowed. She was an associate member of Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Idlewild, Michigan. She was a member of several organizations: the NAACP, the Detroit Idlewilders Club, and the Idlewild Lot and Lake Associations. One of the joys of her life was the time spent swimming, boating and waterskiing at the Lewis-owned family cottages in Idlewild. There will be many lasting memories of over 70 years of Lewiss in Idlewild . After a lengthy illness and a brief stay in the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Susan passed into eternity on Monday, January 16, 2012. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Valerie Kay West; grandchildren, Tameka Susan Jackson, Lewis Avery West, Jr. and Nicole Jackson; three great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Juanita and Janet Lewis, both of Lansing and Virginia Lewis of Arizona. Susan will also be missed by her Lewis nieces and nephews as well as her Riddle cousins, William, Rankin, Ralph, Reginald, Miriam and special friend, Roscoe King.
