Shirley was born on July 31, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Mary Gilkerson and Charles McNutt.
She was a graduate of Westinghouse High School. Following high school, she met and married the love of her life, Stuart Anthony Nolan.
Stuart and Shirley moved from Pennsylvania to Lansing, Michigan where they raised their four sons: Stuart Anthony, Jr. (Tony), John Charles, Michael Wayne and David Madison.
Shirley worked at Main Street Elementary for several years, and was later employed by the State of Michigan, Office of the Secretary of State until her retirement.
Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends, taking cruises and traveling, "making donations" at casinos, cooking and baking beautiful cakes, and checking out the offerings at garage sales.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Stuart; eldest son, Tony; sister, Rebecca "Tootie" Hetherington; brother, Charles Beverly McNutt; cousin, Jodelle Peek; daughter-in-law, Teresa; and dear friends, Israel Gamble, Emogene Leek, Shirley Wills and Eleanor Greene.
Shirley will be dearly missed by: her devoted sons, John, Michael (Dorie) and David; loving grandchildren, John, Jr., Jason (Tamie), Trey Hart, Diamond Ward (Charles) and Kelsey; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Monique "Molly" Hickerson; several nieces and nephews; and cherished friends, Sandra Benn and Ann Banks McClure.
