Shirley
Grant
July 21, 1955 – December 28, 2020
Shirley Marie Grant, age 65, passed away Monday, December 28, 2020 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. She died of complications due to COVID-19. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and avid genealogist.
She was born in Dearborn, MI on July 21, 1955 to Charles Grant and Georgette Duke. Growing up with her five siblings: Lawrence "Larry," Michael, Joseph, Suzette, and Sharron, she made many fond memories. Eventually she started a family of her own, marrying Eric James Hancock on January 11, 1975. Together they had five children: Elizabeth, Kimberly, Jason, Aaron, and Dennis.
After traveling several years as an Army wife, Shirley came back to Lansing, MI with her family where she enrolled at Michigan State University. She graduated with honors and received a Bachelors of Finance early in 1992. With her degree she became a C.P.A., Certified Public Accountant. Starting in the public sector, Shirley soon found a position with the State of Michigan as an Auditor where she remained until her retirement. As a state Auditor, Shirley was able to travel all over Michigan spending weeks here and there. In her free time she took up genealogy and soon found branches of her family throughout Eastern Canada and New York. After her retirement she combined her love of travel with genealogical research and served at her Family History Center at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in East Lansing, MI. Additionally she worked in the state genealogical library located in Lansing, MI.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Charles and Georgette; her brothers, Larry and Michael; and her daughter, Elizabeth. Shirley is survived by: her children, Kimberly, Jason (Trina), Aaron (Christine), and Dennis (Amber); her eleven grandchildren; and her siblings, Joseph (Edna), Sharron Chu, and Suzette (Gary) Browning.
