Sarah Jane
Watts
February 13, 1922 – May 31, 2022
Sarah Jane Watts was born to Eugene and Birdie (Smith) Evege on February 13,1922 in New London, Ohio. Sarah graduated from New London High School. At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at the Second Baptist Church in New London.
On October 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to George Walker. From that union they had seven children: Clinton, George, Jr., Gerald, Stanley, William, Eugene, and Kathy.
In 1964 she relocated to Lansing from Elwell, MI where she met and married Thomas F. Watts of Albion, MI. In addition to raising her own children, Sarah's love for children, especially special needs children prompted her to work with the Foster Grandparent Program at Beekman Center and Windemere Elementary School, retiring after 25 years. As a member of The Tithe Missionary Baptist Church, she served as Sunday School secretary for over 25 years, remembering everybody's birthday and sending birthday cards to everyone. Sarah had a good sense of humor, and her laugh was infectious. She loved people and enjoyed everyone she met. Her favorite hobby was playing Bingo. She was able to live an independent life until 98 years old when it then became time to live with assistance. In honor of her 100 th birthday, the City of Lansing proclaimed February 13, 2022, as "Sarah J Watts Day" with an official proclamation signed by the mayor.
The Lord called Sarah home on the morning of May 31, 2022. Preceding her in death are: her parents, Eugene and Birdie Evege; husband, Thomas F. Watts; children, Clinton Walker and Gerald Walker; sisters, Mae Randleman, Virginia Furcron, Katie Davis and Birdie Hinton; brothers, Norman Evege, Harold Evege and Clarence Evege.
