Obituary

Ruth Helen Roberts Burton was born November 10, 1931 in Lansing Michigan to Andrew and Mabel (Reed) Roberts. She passed from this life on October 11, 2013. She became a teacher, devoted counselor, and retired as an exemplary principal of the Battle Creek School System in 1986. Ruth was cited for her excellent leadership by teachers and administrators. She loved her students and worked to develop them into mature and successful adults. She was a member of The Gayettes Club of Lansing, liked playing bridge, listening to jazz, being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and many other civic organizations. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Burton; siblings Dorothy J. Wilson, Andrew S. Roberts, Jr. and Roger R. Roberts, Sr.; nephews, Kevin D. Wilson, Sr. and Andrew S. Roberts, III. She is survived by nieces, Claudia (Matthew) Davis of St. Louis, MO, and Laurin` (Michael) Thomas; nephew, Roger R. (Yvonne) Roberts, II of Fairfax, VA, ; great nephews, Andrew S. (LeShunda) Roberts, IV of Las Vegas, NV, and Kevin D. Wilson, Jr.; great nieces Mariama Davis of St. Louis, Malene (Bryan) Davis of Atlanta, GA, and Tasha (John) Gibbs; stepson, William L. Burton (Jan) of Battle Creek, MI, Candace D. Burton of Los Angeles, CA; and brother-in-law Rudolph V. Wilson. She leaves behind to cherish her memory a host of cousins and friends in Lansing, Battle Creek and Idlewild, MI. A memorial celebration will be held on Monday, October 21 at 1:00pm at Riley Funeral Home, 426 W. St. Joseph Street, Lansing, MI 48933.
