Obituary

Robert "Bob" Lee Pointer was a dedicated and hard working provider, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was born on January 3, 1928, lived majority of his life and died, in Lansing, Michigan on February 17, 2020. He professed his faith in Christ later in life.

A member of the first graduating class at J.W. Sexton High School, Bob was a multi-sport athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. He started as guard on the first basketball state championship team
in 1945.

Bob served in the U.S. Army (1946-47) doing a tour in Korea, prior to the Korean War. After the Army, Bob along with close friends, Jimmy Holland and Sam Rhodes, Sr., attended Alcorn A & M College in Lorman, Mississippi on football scholarships in 1948. While in Mississippi, Bob pitched for the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Baseball League during a barnstorming tour.

Bob met the love of his life "Miss Alcorn" Helen Johnson at Alcorn and eventually married and returned to Lansing in 1951. Bob worked for the City of Lansing and for approximately thirty four years with the Lansing (Federal) Drop Forge, retiring as a foreman in 1990.

Bob spent time with his children coaching little league baseball, ice skating, fishing, and bowling. During his retirement years, Bob became an avid bowler, with numerous 300 games. He continued league bowling into his 80s. He also pitched on the Federal Drop Forge softball team. He loved all things Spartans, Tigers, Pistons, and Lions. A kind, generous, yet reserved person, Bob had a unique sense of humor and never met a stranger. In later years, he loved to stop and ask people to guess his age.

Bob is preceded in death by: wife, Helen Pointer; parents, Stanley and Ethel Pointer; and brothers, Darrell and Lawrence Pointer.

Bob leaves to cherish his memory are: son, Robert (Louella) Pointer; daughters, Rosalyn (Gentry) Phillips and Tracy (Darrell) Marino; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
