Obituary

Patricia Ann (Davis)Brown, 86, passed away peacefully in Lansing, MI, on May 17, 2015, surrounded by family and caregivers. She was born in Highland Park, MI, on November 5, 1928 to Marie Estelle (Watson) and MacDonald Davis. Patricia was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Austin Brown and son William Joseph Brown. She is survived by sisters Eloise Mahoney and Donna Bolton and children Mary Clare, Kathleen, Paul (Dawn Godzak), Susan, Teresa (Peter Teholiz), and Sharon, and grandsons Alexander and Austin. Pat graduated from St. Mary's of Redford High School in Detroit, MI at age 16. She attended Marygrove College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Mercy College of Detroit. She later spent one summer working as a Boy Scout camp nurse. Pat was introduced to her future husband Joseph Brown by her sister and his brother. Pat and Joe married on January 24, 1953. Together, they raised seven children. Pat returned to nursing for several years in the 1960s. Later, she provided home health care. Pat moved to Lansing at age 65 to be closer to her daughters. She served for several years as a chaplain at Ingham Medical Center. Pat was a lifelong learner who enjoyed books, music, and art. She also loved roses, gardening and her dogs and cats. Pat sang in Sweet Adeline's in Detroit and the High Hopes ladies barbershop chorus in Lansing. She enjoyed swimming, crocheting, and raising African violets. Perhaps her greatest joy came in the persons of her grandsons Alex and Austin. Pat's last years were made more comfortable with the ongoing love and support of her family, and especially her daughter Teresa, who helped in too many ways to count. During Pat's last months, she received compassionate care from the staff at Gardner's Adult Foster Care home and the Grace Hospice. For several years, Pat and eldest daughter Mary Clare provided each other mutual support and companionship while living at Friendship Manor in Lansing. As good fortune would have it, Pat was visiting second daughter Katie in California when Katie had an emergency appendectomy. Intrepid Pat put on her nursing cap and became Katie's patient advocate and facilitated Katie's rapid recovery. When Pat was widowed and living alone in Detroit, older son Paul acted as her chauffer, grocery shopper, dog-sitter and all-round helper, as well as showing up for dinner regularly. Pat raised African violets and roses for years, and so inspired her daughter Susan with a lifelong love of plants. In more recent years the two of them enjoyed visiting public gardens and touring private gardens together. Daughter Teresa was Pat's anchor, helping Pat with many challenges during her retirement, from medical, to financial management, to transportation and recreation. Teresa and her husband Peter also generously provided Pat with her beloved grandchildren, Alex and Austin. At age 58, Pat survived the loss of her treasured younger son Bill, and persevered with her life, residing alone in the family home in Detroit for several years before moving to Lansing. When youngest daughter and namesake Sharon Patricia visited Pat at Friendship Manor, Sharon would often bring dinner and a movie. A G-rated video from the library and a small McDonald's cheeseburger meal were the treats of choice - both tasty and easy on the pocket book. Funeral Mass services for Mrs. Brown will be held Friday, May 22, 10:30am at the St. Gerard Parish, 4437 West Willow Road, Lansing, MI, 48917.
