Noreese Lindsey Underwood, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 2, while a patient at Sparrow Hospital. She had a long struggle with dementia and died from cardiac arrest. Noreese was born in Gadsden, AL, on December 27, 1935, to Forney and Mildred Morrison Lindsey. She attended Carver High School where she met her future husband, Clarence Underwood, Jr. While enrolled at Carver, she played xylophone in the band and had the honor of being named "Miss Carver" in 1953. After high school, she attended Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL. Clarence entered the military, where he became a paratrooper at Ft. Bragg, N.C. They were married in Fayetteville, N.C. After Clarence's honorable discharge in 1955, Noreese and he journeyed to East Lansing with their three-week-old daughter, Jacqueline, where he enrolled in Michigan State University. Noreese was a devoted wife and mother to her family. She was selfless in putting the needs of her family and those of others before her own. She worked for the State of Michigan in several areas, including the Secretary of State, the Department of Commerce, and the Michigan Employment Security Commission, retiring in 1983. A volunteer at Sparrow Hospital, Noreese served on the Women's Board and on the board of Sparrow's Specialty Hospital. She was a member of the East Lansing Links, a professional women's service organization, and Trinity A.M.E. Church. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, gardening, knitting, and attending MSU athletic events. One of her greatest joys was relating to her children and grandchildren. She was an outstanding cook, and her excellent holiday meals were always a special treat for the family. Noreese was preceded in death by her parents, Forney and Mildred Lindsey, her brother, Jack, and sister, Doris. She will be held in loving memory by: Clarence, her husband of 60 years; their three children, Jacqueline, Alvin, and David (Cheryl); three grandchildren, Morgan, Parker, and Blake; her sister, Dorothy and brother, William; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation is from 3-6 p.m. Tues., May 5, at Riley Funeral Home, 426 W. St. Joseph St., in Lansing, and from 10:30-11 a.m. Wed., May 6, at Trinity A.M.E. Church, just prior to the service. The funeral service is at 11:00 a.m. Wed., May 6, at Trinity A.M.E. Church, 3500 West Holmes Rd., Lansing, MI. Mrs.Underwood will lie in repose Tuesday, May 5, 3-6pm at the Riley Funeral Home, 426 West St. Joseph Street, Lansing, MI 48933. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 6, 11am at the Trinity AME Church, 3500 W Holmes Rd, Lansing, MI 48911. The family will receive visitors 30 minutes before services begin.
