Obituary

Dr. Min Chen, 42, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2021. She was an assistant professor at Michigan State University, and an internationally recognized expert in computational seismology.

Min was born on September 8, 1978, in Hefei, Anhui, China. In her youth, she showed great enthusiasm for natural sciences.

Min completed her B.Sc. in geophysics from the University of Science and Technology of China, and received her Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology. She then was a postdoctoral research associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and subsequently at Rice University. She later was a research scientist at Rice University. Min joined MSU in 2017 in joint appointments to the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering and Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Min's research aimed to better understand plate tectonic processes and earthquake rupture processes using high-resolution seismic images. She also worked tirelessly to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the geoscience community. She received the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2020.

In her personal life, Min enjoyed dancing tango, playing soccer, making new friends, organizing social gatherings, gardening with her children and traveling. She was a passionate, energetic and welcoming person for all that knew her.

Min is survived by: her husband, Gabriel Ceriotti; and daughters, Vivian and Mia. She is survived and missed by: her father, Xingchang Chen; and mother, Jiacui Jiang; her sister, Beilei Chen; her nieces, Leyao Chen and Qiong Chen; and many uncles, cousins, and extended family.

A visitation followed by a funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Riley Funeral Home. Family and friends are welcome to come. The service will be livestreamed at https://my.gather.app/ remember/min-chen . Due to the COVID-19 concerns, masks and vaccination are required for attendees.
