Obituary

Marsha Loraine Small was born on October 13, 1950, in New York, New York to Mabel Bernice and Horace Montague Small. At the age of two the family moved to Detroit, Michigan where Marsha remained until 1969 when she left to attend Michigan State University (MSU). Marsha was a proud graduate of the Detroit Public Schools and Michigan State University. She was employed by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for over 32 years and was the first black female Region Administrator. During her tenure at MDOT, Marsha served on the Transportation Research Board, was a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission. Marsha's volunteer activities included Meals on Wheels, MSU athletics tutor, Ronald McDonald House, Women to Work programs, Phi Beta Sigma Education Fund Board, Zeta Phi Beta Youth Group, and Zeta's Helping Other People Excel programs. Marsha was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority for over 40 years and served as the president, 2nd and 3rd vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer, recording treasurer, historian, parliamentarian, and on numerous committees. Marsha is preceded in death by her parents Mabel Bernice, Samuel L. Jackson, and Horace Small. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughter Maria Elizabeth Small; brother Horace (Kyong) Small Jr.; and a host of cousins. Marsha also leaves to mourn her loss her nieras Sylvia Alexander and Patricia Collins; honorary brother John (Jeanne) Watkin, daughters Amanda Auguste-Roberts and Brandalynn Winchester-Middlebrook, and a countless number of Zeta Phi Beta sorors. There will be a visitation held at Riley Funeral Home for Marsha Small; Sunday, November 08, 2015 from 1-7pm. Family Hour will be held on Monday, November 09, 2015 at 10am at First United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 09,2015 at 11am at First United Methodist Church.
