Obituary

A loving wife, dutiful daughter, supportive sister, and loyal friend, Lisa D. Bowie was born on June 4, 1963, in Lansing, Michigan to Joe H. Bowie and Evelyn L. Bowie. A gifted, natural-born athlete, Lisa excelled in baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball, lettering in three of the four sports in which "girls" were allowed to participate while a student at Harry Hill High School. After graduating from Harry Hill, Lisa attended Clark Atlanta University where she received her in B.S. in Business Administration. Not being one to rest on her laurels, in 2009, when then President Barack Obama encouraged people to "go back to school," that's just what Lisa did, earning master's degrees in Humanities and Education from Tiffin University in Tiffin, Ohio.

Lisa spent the early part of her professional career in Human Resources working for a variety of companies in both management and consultant capacities; her most recent position being as a Technology Consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers. In addition, Lisa spent many years as a committed educator, teaching and contributing content to a variety of online courses for several universities, and was herself a tireless learner – garnering numerous certifications, specializations, and commendations.

A prominent thread running through Lisa's life was her admiration and adoration for her people, Black people, whom she loved passionately. She was an outspoken and unapologetic advocate for justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and civil and human rights.  She guided, she coaxed, she coerced, she critiqued, she was purposefully opinionated and rarely, if ever, backed down from her convictions and beliefs. Her well-written and eloquent Facebook posts regarding systemic racism, homophobia, and Black feminism were legendary, tough love for those willing to engage and reflect. If you were fortunate enough to be loved by Lisa, you were protected, checked on, cared for, supported, and uplifted.

20 years ago, Lisa had no idea that what started off as a lunch with her manager to interview a then potential colleague, Alisa D. Perdue, would grow into a friendship, love affair, and marriage of a lifetime. Often describing themselves as best friends and soulmates, the life and love Lisa and Alisa shared was one of a kind. On May 5, 2005, they become engaged and since same sex marriage was not yet legal, on October 14, 2006, family and friends witnessed their beautiful commitment ceremony at Rhodes Hall in Atlanta, GA. After moving to South Carolina in 2016, their wedding ceremony on February 24, 2018, joined them legally.

Inseparable, they faced all of life's challenges and rewards confident in their love and support for one another, never going a single day without letting each other know how much they loved one another. Lisa and Alisa loved to travel, finding new places to experience, and allowing Alisa to document through her photography. Theirs was a love built on passion, compassion, honesty, and support – a proven love that carried them through all of life's trials, tribulations, and losses. As Lisa once said to Alisa, "to love is to laugh, trust and forgive, side-by-side, day-by-day, and over the years we have loved fiercely, unapologetically, and completely." The uncertainty and fragility of what the future might hold never mattered to Alisa and Lisa because they were always confident that the love they shared and the honesty in their hearts was unfailing. Though they were confronted with their fair share of life's challenges, their faith sustained them and served as a catalyst for the exponential growth of their love, a deeper understanding of one another and an unshakable commitment to each other.

On October 19, 2021, Lisa transitioned peacefully after suffering an untimely and unexpected hemorrhagic stroke. May she rest in power and light with the ancestors.

Lisa was predeceased by her father, Joe H. Bowie, Sr.  She leaves to cherish many precious memories: her loving wife, Alisa D. Perdue of Columbia SC; mother, Evelyn L. Bowie of Lansing, MI; brother, Joe H. Bowie, Jr. of Evanston, IL; aunt, Ann Robinson of Lansing, MI; brother-in-law, Stanley A. Brown of Evanston, IL; and a host of beloved family and friends.
