Obituary

Joyce L. Steele was born on March 24, 1949, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Jordan "Buddy" Purnell and Louise Cheeks-Purnell. She was the second of three children and shared a special bond with her siblings, Bernard "Bernie" (Dorothy) Purnell and Jordan "Poncho" (Lori) Purnell Jr.

Joyce received her education through Muskegon Heights Public Schools, graduating in 1967. In 1978, she moved to Lansing, Michigan, where she began her career with the Michigan Legislative Service Bureau. Joyce faithfully served the State of Michigan for more than 25 years before retiring. She was known for her strong work ethic, compassion for others, and witty sense of humor, making a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.

On September 7, 1968, Joyce married Donald L. Steele. Their 12-year union was blessed with one child, Robin M. Steele-Moore. Family was at the center of Joyce's life, and she found great joy in spending time with those she loved.

Joyce was a proud member of Phillips Chapel A.M.E Church in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, where she was an active member of the choir and participated in the church's youth ministry. After becoming a member of Trinity A.M.E Church in Lansing, MI, Joyce continued her faithful service by serving on the Usher Board, leading as President of the Women's Guild, and assisting with Trinity's annual Vacation Bible School program and Summer Barbeque.

Joyce also enjoyed traveling, fresh flowers, and catching up on her favorite television shows. Whether listening to smooth jazz, enjoying dinner with friends, or spending time with her beloved grandchildren, Joyce created lasting memories that will be treasured by all who knew and loved her.

On July 1, 2026, Joyce peacefully departed this life at the age of 77. Though she is no longer with us in body, the love she shared, the lessons she taught, and the legacy she built will continue to live on through her family and all whose lives she touched.

Joyce is survived by: her devoted daughter, Robin (Christopher) Moore; her adored grandchildren, Kani, Kingsley, and Jaida; her beloved sister-in-law, Lori Purnell; her nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends, neighbors, and loved ones whose lives were enriched by her love, kindness, and presence.

Joyce was preceded in death by: her parents; her two brothers, her beloved sister-in-law, Dorothy Purnell; and her cherished grand-dog, Molly. Joyce's life was a beautiful example of love, strength, kindness, and generosity. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know and love her.
