John Ernest Lindsey, Sr was born on Monday, August 6, 1928 in Tishomingo, Mississippi to John Wesley and Alice Lindsey. John Accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He was the fourth born and had five siblings who all preceded him in death.
Mr. Lindsey worked at a restaurant owned by his sister Ida and husband Johnny Williams in Columbus, Mississippi where he was taught wonderful culinary skills by his brother-in-law. In 1945 John Lindsey came to Lansing, Michigan and united with Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Charles Patterson. He worked diligently in this edifice as an Usher and member of the Male Chorus.
John was a member of Capitol Lodge #8 F. & A.M. P.H.A. for over 40 years. He was recently honored as a lifetime member. He also retired from General Motors in 1989 as a Machinist in skilled trades.
John was preceded in death by: his loving and devoted wife, of 54 years, Lizzie Lindsey; parents, Alice Bailey and John W Lindsey; brothers, James Lindsey, Willie Lindsey; sisters, Viania Pride, Katherine McCamey, and Ida Williams; Children, John Lindsey, Jr., and Alene Lindsey; grandson, Lonnie Clemmons, Jr; granddaughter, Erin Linn Jordan; and son-in-law, Aaron Jordan.
John Lindsey, Sr. passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He will forever be remembered and cherished by: his daughters, Mary Scott (Alphonso), Joan Brooks (Wesley), Lori Jordan, and Jessica Jones; sons, Kenneth Wayne Carter (Edna), and Tony Hodges (Lisa); devoted grandsons, John Lindsey III, Jerry Longley, Clarence Longley (Gloria), Brien Jordan, Chilion Proffitt, Jr., John Proffitt, Daryl Proffitt, and Shaun Proffitt; granddaughters, Amanda Jordan, Charnell Gibbs (Hugh), Tammy Dean (Fred), Laura Clemmons-Askew (Tony), Vanessa Rutland, Shannon Wilkins, Tonia Winston (Milton), Tonika Hodges-Jackson (Travis), Veronica Longly-Weathers (Andre) and Michelle Proffitt; 47 Great grandchildren; 26 Great-great-grandchildren; and a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
