Ms.Jane P.Rhodes was born in Lewisburg, Tennessee on July 29, 1940 to the late Coy Phillips and Bessie Inez Rhodes. Her family moved to Lansing in 1957 as part of The Great Migration from the South. Jane graduated from Sexton High School, acquired her Bachelors of Art in Sociology from Olivet College, Michigan, Masters Degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, and her PhD from the University of Phoenix, Arizona. Jane was a very ambitious career woman, as she earned two of her degrees while working full time. She was employed by Lansing Recreation Department as a Recreation Specialist and held several positions in Michigan State Government where she retired as an Executive after 21 years of service. After retiring from State Government, she served as Director of Career Services Network for Olivet College, from 2001 to 2007. Jane was an active and dedicated member of Plymouth Congregational Christian Church for over 27 years and the church was a source of comfort throughout her membership, especially during her illness. Jane was a very passionate member of Zonta International, an organization of executive women that supports the advancement of women. She joined the Lansing Club in 1977 and was sponsored by the late Lansing City Council Leader, Lucille Belen. She was a member of both the Lansing Club and the Zonta Club of Michigan Capital Area. She held various leadership positions in the organization including Vice President, President, Lt. Governor and Governor. She worked tirelessly to accomplish the organizations goals until her death. In addition to her association with Zonta, she was a member of the United Nations Association, Greater Lansing Division, Board of Directors for Lansing Art Gallery and Lansing Public Library, the Black Child and Family Institute, and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Lansing. Jane was preceded in death by: her parents; and a brother, Terry P. Rhodes. Ms. Jane Phillips Rhodes, passed away July 2, 2013. She is survived by three sisters: Bettye Robertson of Capitol Heights, Maryland; and Marsha Ann Jones and Samaria Gill Rhodes of Lansing; three nieces; five nephews; several great nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends. She will be solely missed by her family and friends.
