James Hubbard
Davis, Jr.
July 10, 1935 – August 1, 2023
James Hubbard Davis, Jr. was born July 10, 1935 to James H. Sr. and Mary Johnson in Birmingham Alabama. He was the second of six children. He grew up in Alabama until he was fifteen years old. James moved to Lansing Michigan in 1950 and attended Sexton High School where he played football and ran track, and graduated in 1954.
James always excelled in what he did and had a competitive spirit. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, bowling, and shooting pool. James was also known as "Bam" and "Coach Davis" to many. James coached Pop Warner football with the Lansing Blackhawks and Kappa Express.
James accepted Christ at a young age joining Friendship Baptist Church where he served faithfully under the Pastoral leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Hawkins and the late Rev. Lester D. Stone on West Main Street, and on Pleasant Grove Rd., and migrated to Friendship House of Prayer under Pastor David Ford, and currently Rev. Dr. Jeffery Lang. Brother Davis was Chairman of the Trustee board, and Chairman of the Building and Grounds Maintenance. He sang in the Male Chorus, the Mass Choir, and he taught Sunday School.
Soon after high school James would get a job at General Motors, excelling in skilled trades. James was also an independent contractor, as well as being one of the "J's" along with John Withers, in "JJ's Rib Shack", a very popular Soul Food Restaurant in Lansing. Later, he joined the State of Michigan Department of Management and Budget as a Building Trades Supervisor until he retired.
James married Mildred Loveless, and to this union was born 5 children, Vonda, Sheryl, James Jr., Andrea, and James E.
James was preceded in death by his parents: James H. Sr. and Mary; sisters Carrie, Gladys, Claudia, and Maxine; brother Roosevelt; the mother of his children, Mildred Johnson; son, James H., and daughter Sheryl.
He is survived by his children: Vonda Gilliam of Lansing; Andrea Davis of Alabama; and James (Earnestine) Davis of Lansing; 10 grandchildren; a multitude of great-grands and great-greats; sister Mary Ruth Plummer of Mason; and special friend of his latter years, Ms. Barbara.
