Obituary

George was born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 22, 1925 and made his transition on November 25, 2025.

George was preceded in death by: his parents, Lucy Britt and Aaron Howard; first wife, Cora Howard; baby daughter, Kim Howard; daughter, Robin Howard-Jones; and grandson, Saekuan Jones.

George leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Anne Paquet-Howard; daughter, Jeryl Howard; son, Omar Howard; step-son, Travis Paquet; and eight of his nine grandchildren, Rashaun Jones, Samuel Calhoun Jr., Foluso and Conisha William, Roman Calhoun, Jameek Jones, Jasmine Calhoun, LaMar Howard, and Armon Howard; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

George is loved dearly by all his family and he prayed for them every night. His two favorite prayers were The Lord's Prayer and The Prayer for Protection:

The Prayer for Protection:
The light of God surrounds us.
The love of God enfolds us.
The power of God protects us.
The presence of God watches over us.
The wisdom of God guides us.
The joy of God uplifts us.
Wherever we are, God is and all is well.
And so, it is.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.

George is honored as a WWII Veteran soldier. Being in the war and going overseas was transformative for George. This was because he experienced being treated with respect as opposed to the sometimes-unbearable treatment received in the, then segregated, U.S. Army. As a proud Black man, George's motto became: "There is one race, the Human Race, with different cultures."

George loved to share interesting, historical, and funny stories. We listened, learned, and laughed.

After the war, he left Alabama and moved to Brooklyn, New York. He relocated to Newark, New Jersey where he married his first wife, Cora. They then moved to Lansing, Michigan. George was employed as a skilled and respected physical therapist for 22 years at the Ingham Medical Center Hospital, now called McLaren of Greater Lansing. Later, he married Anne Paquet and added Travis as his loved step-son.

George is remembered as a connoisseur of traditional jazz music. He enjoyed many hours listening to traditional jazz greats of the 1920's and beyond. He was an accomplished self-taught tenor and soprano saxophone player. For years he played at the Lansing Old Town Jazz Festival, Moriarity's Tuesday night jazz and other local venues. He jammed with professional jazz musicians at Bomac's in Detroit, at Maison Bourbon in New Orleans French Quarter and performed at Veterans Day Salutes. At age 92, George recorded, in one take, his CD titled: "George and His Jazz Brothers: How It's Done."

George's many loving friends became like extended family.
