Obituary

Gary Lee Roper, 85, of Lansing, Michigan, peacefully entered eternal rest on March 14, 2026, in Austin Texas after an extended illness, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 4, 1940, in Lansing, Michigan to Theodore and Thomelia Roper, Gary’s life reflected faith, joy, and deep connection to those he loved. At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Gary came of age with determination and spirit, graduating from J.W. Sexton High School in 1960, where he excelled in track and swimming, earning medals that reflected both his discipline and drive. He went on to dedicate 34 years of service to General Motors, retiring in 1998 – a testament to his strong work ethic and commitment.

Gary lived boldly and joyfully, embracing life with style, humor, and heart. Whether he was shopping, racing a car, out on the golf course, dancing, listening to jazz, or planning his next trip, Gary found joy in every moment. Known as the sharpest dresser in town, he carried himself with confidence and charisma, turning everyday moments into celebrations.

He was gifted with the ability to make people feel seen, loved, and uplifted by his presence. A natural jokester, Gary’s laughter was contagious, and his presence could light up any room. To family and extended, he was more than family, he was a mentor, a role model, and a steady source of encouragement.

Family was at the center of Gary’s world. He cherished time spent at gatherings, eagerly anticipating the Cooper and Roper family reunions each year and treasuring visits with loved ones in Canada. These moments, filled with laughter and connection, were among his greatest joys.

He leaves behind a legacy of love that will live on through: his devoted wife of 43 years, Charlotte Roper; his children, Stacy Roper-Jackson, Sabrina Roper, Gary Pennington, LeShar Roper, and Christopher Roper; and those who knew him as “Dad”, Bobby Edwards, Quentin Edwards, Monique Neal, Antonio Neal, and Kita Thorpe.

His two loving sisters, Emma Barber and Sally Murchinson, who remained faithfully by his side throughout his illness, cherish a lifetime of precious memories. Gary’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of family and friends whose lives he touched deeply, will miss him beyond measure.

Gary was preceded in death by: his grandmother, Allie Cooper, his parents, Thomelia and Theodore Roper; his brother, Herschel Roper, his brother-in-law, Cicero Barber, his stepchildren, Willie and Marcia Edwards; and his grandson, Jabari Roper.
