Obituary

Mr. Frank Shannon Curtis X, 83, of Lansing, MI, passed away on January 30, 2022 peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Mr. Curtis X was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi to Willie Mae Jackson and Readie Curtis on October 24, 1938. His family relocated to Michigan in the 1950s where he worked various jobs, retiring in 1985 from Motor Wheel.

Mr. Curtis X loved people and could spark a conversation with anyone. He was an avid reader and you could always spot him carrying a bag of books from community events to family functions. As a historian, he stressed the importance of knowing your history to everyone he met, young and old. He was a genealogist and after just hearing your last name, would be able to give you a breakdown of where your family came from and who you were related to. He was the inspiration behind the Southside Community Coalition established in 1999. He expressed to the founders that a space was needed to keep the kids on the southside of Lansing out of trouble. He stood for what was right and wasn't afraid to express it. He always voiced his concerns during weekly City Council meetings in Lansing. He holds a Silver Membership with NAACP and Lifetime membership with the Curtis/s Family Society.

Mr. Curtis X was preceded in death by: his parents, Readie Curtis and Willie Mae Jackson; siblings, Earnest Shannon Curtis, James (Buster) Curtis, Alma Funchess, and Joe Curtis.

He leaves to cherish his memory: daughter, Yvonne Major; sons, William Thomas, Frank (Tangela) Curtis, Readie Curtis, and Willie Curtis Sr.; grandchildren, Deondra Curtis, Shannon Curtis, Claudia Johnson, Willie Curtis Jr., Tavion Harden, Armas Curtis, Eli Curtis, Ian Curtis, Surae Curtis, Ranni Curtis, and Ruby Curtis; great-grandchildren, JaQuesha (Rodrikus) Curtis-Clark, Zahira Washington, Jamari'a Curtis, DeQuan Mitts, Yasmine Washington, Ahkeim Johnson, and Ty'Juan Peterson; special "great-grandchild," Courtney Clary that he loved as his own; sister-in-law, Geneva (Joe) Curtis; brother-in-law, Dexter Thomas; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
