Obituary

Edward "Ed" Lee Allen was born June 17, 1953 in Winona, Mississippi to Mary Jean Allen. He moved to Lansing, Michigan with his mother in 1963. Ed attended Lansing Public Schools, including Elementary School at Michigan Avenue and West Junior High School.  He graduated from J.W. Sexton High School in 1972, where he played football and track and field. However, he was most noted for wearing #32 / #33 on the basketball court of J.W. Sexton.  Ed helped lead the 1972 basketball team to the State Semi-Finals.
Ed attended Lansing Community College (LCC) and studied Business Administration (he also played basketball for the LCC-STARS). He later, attended the Laborer Construction School in Perry, Michigan; where he completed the courses to receive certification as a forklift driver, electrician, laborer, and masonry.
On October 27, 1979, he married Cynthia Johnson and to this union are three children: Regina, Edward II and Samuel.  Ed enjoyed cooking (for many years he was the "bar-b-que man" at the Allen-Ware Family Reunions along with Uncle John Flowers). He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing chess, watching sports on TV and old shows such as: "Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Andy Griffith, The 3-Stooges, Rifleman and the Lone Ranger" to name a few and laughing. Whenever, he was around old grade school or high school buddies you would often hear stories about the playground at Michigan Avenue or the hallways of West Junior or "back in the day at J.W. Sexton" followed by laughter and "man those were the good ole days."
Above all of his accomplishments, he was mostly grateful for the joy and peace he found in the relationship when he accepted Jesus Christ into his life on July 4, 2008. He immediately became a member of the New Hope Church of God in Christ, where he was faithful in Sunday school, Prayer Bible Band (bible study), men's choir, inspirational choir, outreach, and the audio/sound system. During a testimony service you could hear him say "I'm blessed and I thank God that I'm saved."
Ed was preceded in death by: his maternal grandparents, Eugene Allen and MaryAnn Ware; father, Willie McElrath; brother, Ellis McElrath; sister, Gay Wiggins; and littlest angel infant grandson, Samuel Allen, II.
Ed at the age of 62, transitioned from this life on earth to everlasting life with the Lord on May 24, 2016.
Ed leaves to cherish his memories; his wife of 36 years, Cynthia; daughter, Regina (Derek) Braham of Ft. Washington, Maryland; sons, Edward II (Ashley) Allen, Samuel (J'Traea) Allen of Lansing; mother, Mary (Gerard) Overstreet;  grandchildren, Derek Braham, II and Ghabrielle Allen; siblings, Flora (John) Thomas of Lexington, Kentucky, Vera Smith of Lithonia, Georgia, Harold (Lydia) McElrath) of  Lansing, Ail McElrath of Iowa, Ray (Diane) McElrath of Nashville, Tennessee; mother-in-law, Ethel Morrow; god-daughters, Tonyelle Russell and Tehna Mack; god-sons, Tony and Charles Mack, Dontrelle McCray, and Mykcal Powell; and a host of aunts, uncles, in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
