Edgar James Flennoy was born on February 22, 1925, to Nathaniel Flennoy and Martha Moore in a little town called Roba, Alabama (right outside of Tuskegee). He was the sixth of seven children born to Nathaniel and Martha. Martha Moore died when Edgar was four years old. He was raised by his Aunt Adeline Moore Rush until 1939.

When he was 14 years old, he went to Florida to live with his eldest brother James Chambliss (Martha’s oldest son). When he was 15 years old, he moved to Georgia to get a job at the 2nd Army Division. It was discovered that he left his Social Security Card in Alabama. Edgar really wanted this job. The employer, who was going to hire Edgar, suggested that he take his mother’s last name and apply for a new Social Security card. So, he did and was able to start work that same day. He never changed his name back to Flennoy.

In 1941, Edgar moved back to Alabama to live with family. In 1942, he decided to head north to Cleveland, Ohio, to find work, but his cousins Alonzo Swanson and Glenn Flennoy convinced him to go with them to Michigan. So, in 1942 Edgar, Alonzo and Glenn bought a train ticket to Detroit, Michigan. They stayed two nights in Detroit before going to Lansing.

In Lansing, Edgar had several jobs before he was 18 which made him old enough to work at the Drop Forge. At the Drop Forge he worked as a Millwright and a welder. He worked for the Drop Forge for 38 years and retired at the age of 55.

On November 15, 1945, Edgar Moore married Lottie Mae Johnson. The couple had six children: Lorie, Jennifer, Kenrick, Derrick, Rene, and Bernard. Some of Edgar’s hobbies were fishing, hunting, traveling, buying real estate, upholstering furniture and playing cards.

During his marriage to Lottie they traveled to 28 countries, including: Kenya, Egypt, Israel, and China to name a few. Both Edgar and Lottie were entrepreneurs at heart. Lottie and Edgar were married for over 76 years until Lottie went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2022.

He was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church serving faithfully as an Usher and Security Officer. He was a member for over 80 years.

Edgar quietly and peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the age of 101. He was proceeded in death by: his parents; all his siblings; sons, Lorie and Derrick; daughter, Rene DeMyers; grandson, Jason Moore-Flennoy; granddaughter, Mishon Moore; and great-grandson, Xavier Guy. Left to cherish his memories are: his children, Jennifer, Kenrick and Bernard (Greta); 11 grandchildren; 17 great  grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; special niece, Meryl Boykins; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends all who loved and adored him. Edgar Moore was seen as a quiet man of few words, however, to have known him was to know a deep, rich and beautiful history.
