Dorothy Ann Strothers Kennedy, age 105, was born on August 4, 1908 in Staunton, Va. to Chester A. and Annie E. Strothers, and passed away on November 21, 2013. Mrs. Kennedy retired from the City of Lansing as a Program Worker with the Lincoln Community Center. She attended and graduated from Bennett College for Women, California Teachers College, and Wilberforce University. Active in the Lansing Community having served with: Girl Scouts, Social Services Committee Board, Lansing Association of Womens Club, member of Trinity A.M.E. Church (Usher Board, Womens Guild, and Womens Missionary Society), YWCA Board of Directors, United Way, Interracial Fellowship Group, Founding Member of the National Black Caucus of Aging, Charter Member of Delta Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was preceded in death by: her husbands, Cole B. Toomer and James Kennedy. She leaves to mourn: nephew, Chester M. Grinage; step-children, Winfred Alton Kennedy and Marilyn C. Wade; God-children, Alice Brown and Kay Porter; cousin, Shirley Brown Perry; sister-in-laws, Emma Kennedy, Arlene Kennedy, Ruth (Herbert) Kennedy-McIntosh, Katie Kennedy-Goines, Magdalene (Len) Kennedy-Patton. She also leaves many devoted friends: Dorothy Nichols (Phillip) Lewis, Dr. Olivia Letts, Myrtle and John Buckner, Dr. Jessie Storey Fry, Hugh and Gladys H. Scott and family, Esther Norton, Eric Davis, Cleo Franco, Billye Swanson, Cornelius Robinson and Randy Dan Robinson as neighborly helpers. Mrs. Kennedy will lie in repose Monday, December 2, 12-4pm at Riley Funeral Home, 426 W. St. Joseph Street, Lansing, MI and from 5-8pm, at Trinity AME Church, 3500 W. Holmes Rd., Lansing, MI. The family will receive friends Monday, December 2, 5-8pm, at the church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 3, 1pm, at the church with Rev. Lila R. Martin, officiating.
