Obituary

Dawn Marie Campbell was born on December 9, 1967, to Auprey Lee Campbell and Marie E. Sturdivant in Lansing, Michigan. She had a melodic voice, a beautiful smile, and an infectious laugh. As a young child, her parents often found her reading books, singing gospel songs with her sisters, or happily playing with cousins and friends. Her vibrant personality fostered many long-lasting friendships. Dawn loved the Lord. In 2023, she joined Walk in Truth Ministries and re-dedicated her life to the Lord. She was grateful for the love and support they provided to her as a member.

Dawn was a proud graduate of Lansing's Everett High School in June 1985; her love of knowledge continued while attending Michigan State University (MSU), graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1991. She continued with a master's in social work in 2000 to showcase her commitment to learning and personal growth.

She met her wife, Lisa Thompson, while matriculating through MSU. Together, they raised three sons, Jack, Zachary, Evan Campbell, and many dogs and cats. Family and friends often gathered to celebrate birthdays, holidays, graduations, and especially her beloved craft nights.

Dawn was a charismatic conversationalist who attracted people from various backgrounds. Working as a social worker for over 27 years with the State of Michigan, she specialized in providing caring and dedicated service to the public. Dawn devoted herself to the welfare of vulnerable adults and children in need. Her commitment went beyond professional duties, reflecting a deep compassion and empathy that endeared her to those facing challenges. Whether through advocacy, support, or direct assistance, she tirelessly worked to make a positive difference in the lives of the most vulnerable citizens of Michigan.

Dawn loved crafts; knitting and crochet were her favorites, but she would try anything. If she was carrying her bag of yarn and needles, you knew she planned to stay and visit for a while. Love was in each handmade hat, scarf, dishcloth, or socks for loved ones. Her creations brought appreciation and warmth to those around her, contributing to the meaningful connections she built throughout her life.

In 2021, Dawn received the news that she would be entering the fight of her life as she battled multiple myeloma. She sought treatment, went into remission, and continued living her best life.

On Sunday, January 7, 2024, to our surprise, Dawn peacefully entered her eternal rest at home with the Lord. Dawn touched many people throughout her life, making friends and treasuring them as family. She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life: wife, Lisa Thompson; three sons, Jack, Zachary, and Evan; her mother, Marie E. Campbell; sisters, Barbara Malone, Bonnie Sturdivant, and Dr. Nicole (Calvin) Beard; brothers, Michael Sturdivant and Steven Campbell; many aunts, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Dawn was preceded in death by: her father, Auprey Lee Campbell; stepfather, Rev. Iva James Ford; sisters, Janice, and Jackie Campbell; and brother, Auprey Lee Campbell.
