Cora Lee
Hill
December 25, 1928 – September 8, 2024
Cora Lee Hill transitioned to heaven on September 8, 2024, at the age of 95, in her home surrounded by family. Cora was born in Simsboro, Arkansas on December 25, 1928 to the union of Elizabeth (Wills) Askew and John Henry Bowles.
At the young age of 18, Cora, her brother, James "Buddy" Askew, her mother and then stepfather, Rev. Edward Askew moved to Lansing, Michigan. Where she settled and planted her roots. Cora was a retired Local 652 member of General Motors.
Cora accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at an early age. There wasn't a story in the Bible she didn't know. She attended Prince of Peace Church of Lansing, of which her mother and stepfather, Rev. Edward Askew founded, he was the initial Pastor. Her mother named the church. The number of souls Rev Askew brought to the Lord are too numerous to count.
Cora, out of necessity, was a strong black woman. As she was confronted with challenges in life she was always determined to turn every "no" she faced into a "yes."
Cora stressed to her children simple life lessons: be kind to people, help people in need, you never know if you may need help. Don't be lazy. Keep a clean house. When you walk don't shuffle your feet. Stand up straight and tall. She encouraged us to love the Lord.
Cora had a great sense of humor that she passed down. Here are a few of her favorite quotes;
- No one gets out of this life alive.
- You can choose your friends but not your family.
Cora enjoyed trips with her friends and going to the casino. She enjoyed dressing up in her nice clothes, taking in a good jazz concert or going out to eat at her favorite restaurant, Red Lobster. Cora's greatest love was the "love of her family." She enjoyed celebrating the holidays having fun, good food and family all around.
Cora was preceded in death by: father, John Henry Bowles (Memphis, TN); mother, Elizabeth Askew; stepfather, Edward Askew (Lansing, MI); brother, James "Buddy" Askew (Niles, MI); sister, Pearlie Ann Bean (Memphis, TN); aunt, Helen Pulley; uncle, Earl Pulley; nephew, Cecil Hampton; son, Roosevelt Hill Jr.; daughter; Ms. Mary "Liz" Hill; son, John E Hill (Battle Creek, MI); son, Alden M. D. Hill Judge; grandsons, James "Pig" Patrick Hill and Shadd L Hill; and great granddaughter, Miss Laycharr Aldena Jackson.
Cora leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Patricia A Ottarson Hill; son, Robert "Bic" Hill; daughter, Sharon Hill (VA); daughter, Coral D. "Willie" Hill; an abundance of grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; many good friends and neighbors.
