Obituary

Thousands of young people in Lansing were mentored, encouraged, and inspired by Rev. Dr. Clyde Carnegie, who died on May 11th, 2023 surrounded by his family. Dr. Carnegie, the oldest of four children, was born on December 4, 1942 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. After graduating from Benton Harbor High School in 1961, he was accepted to Michigan State University. There he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological and Physical Sciences, a Masters degree in School Administration, and a Doctoral degree in Administration and Higher Education.

It was there at Michigan State that he was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and met the woman who he would love, honor, and cherish for the rest of his life, Cynthia. They were married in 1964 and moved to Lansing in 1965. Dr. Carnegie was an educator for 36 years. His first job was teaching science at West Junior High School. Later he served as an assistant principal at Dwight Rich Junior High and as principal at Walter French Junior High School. He became the youngest principal of J. W. Sexton High School in 1980 where he worked for 22 years.

Believing in the power of faith, prayer and community Dr. Carnegie gave his time and his talents to help enrich the growth of many organizations throughout the city. At the time of his death, he was serving on the Lansing Police Board of Commissioners. He was a chaplain for the Lansing Police Department and the Fire Department. A former member of the Board of Directors of The American Red Cross, WKAR, and United Way, to name a few. He served as past President of the local chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and was the fraternity's National Chaplain from 2013-2016. He served Lansing Rotary as its President before being appointed to the Governorship of District 6360 from 1994-1995. He received many awards for his civic involvement in the Greater Lansing community and is an NAACP Silver life member.

Friendship Baptist Church was always near and dear to his heart. He was a member for 56 years. During those years, his involvement included being a Sunday school teacher, a Deacon, Associate Minister, and finally Pastor. He loved, encouraged, and supported the church's ministries and helped create new ministries within the church. His faith, belief in Jesus, and the word of God was paramount in his life. He led by example.

Surviving to cherish sweet memories of their time together are his wife, Cynthia; and two daughters, Alexis Carnegie-Dunham (Marvin), and Sheridan Hill (Warren); grandchildren, who he lovingly referred to as the "Magnificent Seven" are, Reagan Dunham, Peyton Dunham, Milo Lucas, Channing Lucas, Asa Hill, Clyde Hill, and Warren Hill; goddaughter, Shyann Gilkey; his brother, Thomas E. Carnegie (Kathy); and sisters, Edith Gavin (Larry), and Rev. Carolyn Bell (Leon); nephews, Thomas J. Carnegie, Brian Taylor, and Carey Cooper (Ursula); and nieces, Carrie Benedict (Jay), Colleen Drake (David), and Caroline Gavin-Jefferson (Jeremy).
