Obituary

Dr. Charles Scarborough, born on May 20, 1933, in Pickens, MS, passed away peacefully July 14, 2024. He was the youngest child of James and Edna (Lynch) Scarborough.

Dr. Scarborough embarked on a distinguished academic journey, earning his BS in Biology from Rust College, followed by an MS in Biology from Northwestern University, and a PhD in Zoology from Michigan State University. His career spanned 37 years at MSU, where he held various roles including Full Professor in the College of Natural Science and Director of Lyman Briggs residential college, retiring in 1998.

Dr. Scarborough co-founded the MSU Black Faculty Association contributing significantly to campus diversity and inclusion efforts.

Beyond academia, Dr. Scarborough was a community leader and founding member of Phi Beta Sigma (Epsilon Tau Sigma Graduate Chapter) serving for over 50 years.

In his leisure time, Dr. Scarborough enjoyed reading, gardening. playing Bridge, and avidly following sports, particularly MSU Football and Basketball, the Boston Celtics, and Brooklyn/LA Dodgers.

Dr. Scarborough was preceded in death by: his wife, Stacia Scarborough; siblings, Dolores (Walter) Reid, Bernice Scarborough, and James (Edith) Scarborough.

He is survived by: sons, Charles II and James (Yolanda); former wife, Merion Scarborough; brother, Alvin Lynch; cousin, Lovie Lynch; grandchildren, Jyssica, Peter, Andrew, Sarah, Nehe-Miah, and James; great-grandchildren, Harlem and Noelle; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and family.

Dr. Charles Scarborough's legacy includes his dedication to education, his contributions to academic and social causes, and his love for his family. He leaves behind an enduring impact on those who knew him.
