Barbara Ann Smith was born April 7, 1937 in Warm Springs, Georgia to Robert L. Smith and Julia O. Avery Smith. She was their only child. The Smith family moved to Detroit, Michigan, when Barbara was three years old. Barbara was educated in the Detroit Public School system and graduated from Central High School, in 1955. During her time in high school, she was an active student musician and cheerleader for the Central High Trailblazers. She attended Highland Park Junior College and then, Wayne State University. One evening, while accompanying her parents to a bridge party, she met her future husband, Jackie D. Moore. On June 30, 1957, Barbara and Jackie were united in marriage. Their eldest child, David Craig Moore of Detroit, Michigan was born in 1960. Their daughter, Dana Christine Moore of Holt, Michigan was born in 1971. She began her career with the city as a Junior Typist and retired from the Finance department as Human Resources Director. One of the proudest moments of her career included being appointed by Mayor Coleman A. Young, as his personal secretary, during his first two terms in office. Outside of her professional career, Barbara was quite active in a variety of community service organizations. Barbara was a proud 55-year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the nations first Greek-lettered sorority founded by African-American college women. She was also a member of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. This is a national humanitarian non-profit organization of women dedicated to serving youth and adults, within the community. Barbara was a member of the American Business Womens Association (ABWA) and a member of Berea St. Pauls United Methodist Church, in Highland Park, Michigan. She was a member there for over 50 years. Barbara was an avid bridge player, enjoyed gardening and loved watching college and professional sports.
