Obituary

Bamunoba Basara was born on July 15, 1935 in Bandichongo, in the north-eastern Congo. His father was Mr Siya Matayo and his mother Mrs Kabazungu. Bamunoba is a Congolese by birth.

Bamunoba was married in 1958 to Mrs Suzane Zaule Bamunoba. Their union was blessed with seven children, three boys and four girls, and all are alive. Basara became a widower on November 25, 2011, when Suzane passed away. Bamunoba got remarried on November 28, 2014 to Kiiza Ngasirwaki, with whom they shared their life together until  August 3, 2020.

Bamunoba Basara loved the Lord, whom he dedicated his life to and served with passion and sacrifice all his life. He also had lots of love for people. Bamunoba was a great leader. He rendered faithfully and with loyalty great services to the now Communauté Emmanuel, and this in various capacities. God endowed him with many gifts: a writer, a Bible teacher, a pastor, an evangelist, a musician (he played the accordion).

Bamunoba began his career as a technician for the printing press named "Les Éditions Évangéliques" in Nyankunde, the then headquarters of the Brethren Church in Congo, in the north-eastern Congo. After serving the Lord in this capacity for several years, he then went to Bible School in Linga where he spent three years. Upon completion of his Bible training, Bamunoba returned to Nyankunde. He then was appointed the Pastor-Inspector of the Evangelists of the Brethren Church in Congo. He also was appointed the Editor-in-chief of the Magazine Neno la Imani. Moreover, he was appointed the President of Nyankunde District, which was under his good leadership for several years.

In January 1993, Bamunoba moved to Bunia because of the break out of tribal war in Nyankunde. He then was appointed Church Elder and then Senior Pastor of the Bunia-Ville Assembly, the position he occupied until 2003, when the tribal war broke up in the region and Bunia town. This situation forced him to move to Fort-Portal, in Uganda and then to Kyaka, where he carried on with the preaching of the gospel. At the Kyaka refugee camp particularly, he started a few churches nearby.

One of his great contributions is to cause new churches and new districts to come into being. From the sole Nyankunde District, under his leadership, many districts were born: Rwampara District, Itendey District, Sota District, Bunia District, Lake Albert Disctrict, Djugu-Nord and Djugu-Sud. Bamunoba was the Customs keeper of Kabarole County. He was appointed the Customs keeper of this County for his father, the later Siya, was the Chief village in Oyo Locality, in Kabarole County. As Customs keeper, one of his roles was to appoint the chosen person to be in charge of the County. He therefore had the last word.
