Alma Johnson
Civils
August 13, 1921 – April 27, 2017
Alma Johnson , born on August 13, 1921 in Woodlawn, Tennessee to Maynard and Willie Mae (Dabney) Johnson, was one of eleven siblings. She lived a beautiful and blessed life, until the Lord whispered in her ear on the morning of April 27th calling her home at the age of 95.
She was educated in the public school system and graduated in 1941 from Burt High School in Clarksville, Tennessee.
Having being brought up in the Christian faith, she committed her life to Christ and joined Woodlawn Elizabeth Baptist Church in 1932, where she grew stronger in her faith and belief.
In 1942, Alma journeyed to Lansing, Michigan to join her siblings and took membership with Union Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor N.J. Johnson. She was a dedicated member and served on the auxiliaries of the Young Matrons, Sunday School, the Missionary Ministry and Baptist Training Union (BTU).
Later, Alma relocated to California to unite with the love of her life, Douglas, while he served in the U.S. Navy. After his honorable discharge, they united in holy matrimony on April 6, 1943 at the City Hall in Indianapolis, Indiana. Alma and Douglas returned to Lansing, where they settled and raised seven lovely children: Portia, Glenn, Ivan, Douglas Duane, Resa, Marcia and Anita. They were obedient to the Lord, raising them in the way they should go.
Brother Douglas was a member of the Capitol City Golfers and Alma enjoyed being a Golfer's Sweetheart, spending time with him on his many golf activities. Alma was truly a virtuous woman; there was nothing she enjoyed more than being a homemaker and seamstress as she cared for her family. She was also known, for her beautiful penmanship, which she used as a ministry sending cards and notes to cheer others, until her health began to fail. All that Alma received from others she turned around and blessed them or others back with gifts. Throughout her life, she was a lady that exemplified true class and dignity. When it came to worshiping the Lord, her style of dress was very poised and sophisticated.
Alma loved people and family gatherings, where she engaged in great conversation and laughter, especially with her many grandchildren. She was a strong woman who, even as she aged, continued to be feisty and adamant about fending for herself. Affectionately, known as "Mama C", she was well loved and will truly be missed not only by her family, but the many people who considered her a caring friend.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Douglas Civils, sons, Glenn and Douglas Duane and daughters, Resa and Anita.
She is survived by: daughters, Portia and Marcia Civils; son, Ivan Civils; grandchildren, Iva Civils, Trina Lewis and Toni Guy, Monte (Jania) Civils, Johnathon Guy, Fred Guy, Andre (Christina) Beacham, Tyrell Potts, Brent Jones, Omar Civils, and Shoen Lewis; numerous great grandchildren; sister, Lottie (Edgar) Moore, sister-in-laws, Johnnie Mae Johnson and Eura Lee Pruitt; daughter-in-law, Sharon Civils; special niece, Margo (Stanley) Scott; special cousin, Ophelia Allen; and many other relatives, several adopted daughters and many loving friends.
