Obituary

Albert Lee Kelley Sr. was born to James and Lula Johnson Kelley on March 22, 1922 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He accepted Christ at a young age and united with the Mt. Gillard Baptist Church of Vance, Alabama. Albert has been a resident of Lansing for more than 65 years. After graduating from J.W. Sexton High School he attended MSU. Albert retired from General Motors in 1981 after working more than 30 years. He was one of the first black Supervisors in Maintenance breaking down barriers for others to follow. He often returned to Fisher Body when called to troubleshoot problems saving the company millions of dollars. Albert was a longtime member of Friendship Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, assisting with the Bus Ministry and Building and Grounds Committee Chairman. He was dedicated to helping and serving his church. He was an active member of the NAACP, held various leadership positions and strongly believed in uplifting the community. Gardening was one of Albert's passions. He was known for his vegetable garden and how generously he shared his produce with others. Also innovative, Albert became an inventor and received a patent for a Coin Holder on August 9, 2002. Life's journey came to an end on this side, October 21, 2015. The Lord gently closed his eyes and said, "Well Done." Preceded in death by his patents; six sisters, Sarah Adams, Elizabeth Cooper, Ella C. Parnell, Corine Kelley, Zelia Griffin and Bertha Davis; seven brothers, Joseph, William, Olise, James, Ervin, Jim and Fayette; former wife Pauline Stokes Kelley and son Gregory. He leaves to cherish his memory: sons, Albert (Barbara) Kelley Jr., Darrell (Hazel) Kelley, and Marcus (Carol) Kelley; daughters: Verlecia (Kenneth) Johnson and Tequila (Michael) Roby; grandchildren, Kinte, Jermaine, Shawn, Robert, Felecia, Shaionte, Anisha, Tekiya, Jelani and Zakiya; six great grandchildren, Khristian, Pauline, Priscilla, Jenesis, Kaiyson, Zola and long time friend Jean Chapell along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was an avid Spartan fan; however, his heart belonged to Alabama, Crimson Tide. His family will always cherish his legacy of love, hard work and helping others.
